Planned medical costs abroad
Are you planning to visit another EU country for treatment? In some cases mandatory health insurance may cover your medical costs abroad.
It is advisable, however, to obtain prior approval from your health insurance provider, particularly if the treatment involves an overnight stay in a medical care institution or if you require specialist and particularly expensive treatment. This way you will know exactly which documentation you require and how much you can expect to be refunded.
Does your health insurance provider allow treatment abroad? In that case the same conditions and prices will apply as those applicable to the residents of that country.
Your health insurance provider cannot refuse to give authorisation if:
- you have to wait too long for treatment in Belgium,
- you cannot find appropriate treatment in Belgium (despite the fact that it is included in your health insurance cover).
